One of the great things about visiting Miami is having the chance to island hop. There’s no doubt Miami is full of fun things to do; however, sometimes it’s nice to slow down the pace and enjoy a change of scenery.
Don’t miss Flagler Monument Island, accessible by boat or kayak and home to a 110-foot (34-meter) obelisk paying homage to Henry Flagler, a founder of Standard Oil and who helped to build up Florida’s Atlantic Coast. While during the week the island is pretty relaxed, on weekends it tends to turn into a giant party, allowing you to experience Miami nightlife if you choose. Bring a bathing suit but also wear sneakers, as there is lush flora to trek through as well as crystal water to swim in. Bonus: On the route from Miami to the island it’s not uncommon to see manatee, tuna and tropical fish.
Another great island to visit from Miami is Key Biscayne, home to beautiful parks like Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park and Crandon Park. There’s also picturesque beaches, hiking, historic attractions and the only federally-recognized underwater archeology trail in the United States, the Maritime Heritage Trail. Just south of Key Biscayne one can also explore Biscayne National Park by boat. Inside the park you’ll find a number of islands worth a visit, some of which include the Ragged Keys, Soldier Key, Sands Key, Totten Key, Elliott Key and Old Rhodes Key. If you’re truly fit you’ll be able to reach the park by kayak from Miami; however, most people will need a boat.
If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can reach the Bahamas from Fort Lauderdale, located about 30 minutes from Miami via 3-hour shuttle boat. You’ll disembark in Freeport Grand Bahama, where you can swim, snorkel, have dolphin encounters, see locals dancing on the beach, learn how conch salad is made, peruse markets, each delicious seafood and much more.
An Island Hopping Cruise from Miami Beach is one way to partake in this fun activity. This six-hour excursion takes you to several islands (typically three) near Miami for some fun in the sun. Along with the chance to take scenic landscape photos, some possible activities include sunbathing, swimming, snorkeling, beach volleyball, fishing and savoring delicious local food.
